How do you feel about interruptions? Interruptions to a conversation, to your train of thought, or to your planned activities can be annoying and frustrating. There is a type of interruption, though, that can not only be beneficial but also lifesaving. That’s the interruption of the unbalanced flow of electricity to an electrical outlet. Since 1975, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (or, GFCIs for short) have been a standard in the National Electric Code. These helpful gadgets are designed to monitor the electrical current that flows to an outlet, and immediately interrupt the flow when it detects an imbalance, potentially preventing fires and electrocution.
You likely have GFCIs in your home. However, having GFCIs is only half the battle. It’s important to test them from time to time. You can do this by plugging something into the outlet and turning it on. Then, press the TEST button on the face of the outlet. If the appliance turns off, you should be in good shape.
