As a homeowner, there are plenty of things you should know about protecting your electronic devices from power surges and spikes. Here are a few of them:
- Power surges aren’t just the result of lightning storms. Even simple things like another high-powered appliance on the same circuit switching on or off can cause a power surge that can damage other devices.
- You can protect your whole home from surge protection. This doesn’t mean buying a lot of standalone units – a licensed electrician can install a surge protector that covers your whole property. However, you may still want to use a standalone unit for your more expensive devices, too.
- Surge protects should be replaced every two years. As protection is triggered, the surge protector’s capacity is diminished. Eventually, while it’ll still power your electronics, it will eventually stop offering protection.
- Not all power strips are surge protectors. This one’s straightforward – check your power strip to be sure it includes surge protection features before you rely on it.
