It’s a sad fact these days but, with so many natural disasters this country has been experiencing in recent years, its very important that we are as prepared as we can be in advance for one.  Knowing what to do in an emergency situation is a vital step to staying safe.  So, here are a few suggestions on how to prepare ahead:

During an emergency disaster communication can become difficult, take some time to discuss as a household the steps they would need to take during a time like this.  As its very possible you would not all be together during a disaster, especially if it happens very suddenly, discuss the locations of meeting points and evacuation routes etc.  so that you would automatically know where to go.

Prepare an emergency go bag.  This should be a size that could be grabbed easily in the event of an emergency.  It is advised that you have in it enough supplies to be able to survive for about 3 days.  Make sure you include any medications you take, copies of essential documents and cash, as well as water and food.  It is also advisable to have extra supplies at home such as bottled water and canned goods.

Whatever form a natural disaster takes, the home very often takes the brunt of it and, while its not possible to prevent all damage, there are things that can be done to minimize it.  For example, if the home’s utilities are left on during a disaster, it can make the home very hazardous to return to.  It’s important to know the location of shut off valves for electric, gas and water.

Keep trees well-trimmed back from the home.  Make sure gutters and downspouts are free and clear of dirt and debris.  Fix any minor repairs on the house as soon as you can.  Yes, keeping your property well maintained can go a long way to minimizing damage during a disaster.

In summary, advanced preparation is the key to keeping you and your household safe during an emergency situation.
