Sinkholes are something we’re hearing more and more about these days.  They can either be formed naturally or are human induced, but the one thing they have in common is their ability to cause great amounts of destruction to property, roads and, even worse, human life.  So, perhaps you’re wondering: are there any warning signs that indicate a sinkhole has started forming? Yes, there are.  It must be mentioned, however, that these indicators could also be signs of something else so its good to first find out if you live in an area more prone to sinkholes.

Have a check around your property and take note of any changes you see.  Some of the changes you should look out for are cracks forming in circular patterns in the ground, rapid ground subsidence and sudden openings in the ground.  While these are some of the more extreme changes you could notice, there are other indicators that could possibly signal a sinkhole.  For example, you might notice pools of water in areas that previously have not had this issue.  You might also notice an area where plants are starting to die, this could be because water is draining away from the area and into a sinkhole.  Trees and fence posts etc. could start to lean over or start exposing areas previously under the earth.  All these could indicate a sinkhole forming.

There are also warning signs inside the home as well.  You might start to notice windows and doors no longer shutting like they used to.  Cracks could form in the floors and walls of the home.  If you have well water, it might start becoming muddy or cloudy looking.  These are all possible sinkhole warning signs.  If you have noticed some of these things happening on your property, it would be a good idea to have it checked out, after all, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
