Some of the outlets in your home might have 3 holes, while others have 2. You might know that this means they are grounded or ungrounded, but do you know why it matters? Do you know for a fact that those grounded outlets are properly wired? Why should you care?

Any appliance that is plugged in and has a short could turn into a death trap if the outlet isn’t properly grounded. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell whether or not an outlet is grounded properly without a tester. You could invest in a testing device yourself. They can be bought at a fairly low cost. You could also consult an electrician to have him test your outlets.

If your house is older, it is possible that you are not properly wired for grounded outlets. If this is the case, installing ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCI’s will protect you from being electrocuted.

Always have a professional electrician do these modifications to your electrical system. By doing that, you can be confident that you and your family will not be harmed.
